Assignment: Choose a favorite famous album cover (at least one that we would recognize) and recreate it at home. You can have a little fun with this assignment, like the quarantine masks seen above, or try to stay closer to the original roots of the album design. Choose something interesting, not a solid color album or anything like that. You will create one single album cover, take a photo of the recreation and add the original text of the cover back on to make it look like the original. You will pass them in side-by-side like you see above. I would suggest using Canva or Adobe Spark to make the album cover. Steps: • Research different famous album covers, when you find a few you like think about how you are going to recreate the image on the front. • Make a Canva or check out Adobe Spark to see which will allow you more manipulation of the image and the text (remember you need to add the text back into the album) • Start by choosing the "invitations" or "instagram" option on Canva. Remember an album is square. You can also do custom dimensions. • Create a strong recreated image like the album and edit it to look like the original (filters are fine for this). Pay attention to lighting and framing and objects—it doesn't have to be perfect but we should be able to see where the inspiration came from. • When you are finished, download your design and submit on google classroom. Assignment: Seeing as most music concerts, festivals, and tours are cancelled this year due to COVID-19, I'd like you to choose a favorite festival or concert that you wanted to attend and redesign the poster. You can make up false dates and information, but try and use some of the actual information, especially the logo. You will create one single festival or music poster using any digital program you'd like, but if you have never used one I would suggest using Canva. You can use the stock imagery that is available on canva if needed, but be sure to change out colors and text and make the design your own. Steps: • Research different types of music posters, when you find a few you like think about how the design of the poster tells us something about the show or festival. (Woodstock poster is more psychedelic, Coachella shows us images of sunsets, Boston Calling has rich colors, a country music fest might show a Cowboy Boot, etc.) • Make a Canva account on a computer or laptop if possible (the desktop version is much easier to use than the app) • Start by choosing the "poster" option on Canva. You can use one of the designs as an inspiration but you CANNOT just choose a design and change a few elements. This should be created by you and redesigned by you. • Play around with the elements available to you in Canva—there are tons of options and photos and color blocks. You can also upload your own images, especially if you need to use a logo from the actual festival you are designing for. • When you are finished, download your design and submit on google classroom. Assignment: You will create one single calligram using any shape you desire. You can create a map, or something more fluid like the tree you see above. More words adds more interest, but you can also create a calligram using one single word and change it with shape, size, and color. Steps: • Research different types of calligrams, some are more straightforward, many are digital, and others are pen and paper. • The shape of your chosen object will be created by the words you draw on paper, calligrams can be busy and fill the space, or even allow some negative space to help create the shape. • Take a regular printer paper size 8.5 x 11, and pencil or pen to create your calligram (tracing a few light outlines to start your calligram will be helpful, you will erase these later on) • Don't shy away from color if that is what you'd prefer—you can use paint, markers, colored pencils, pen, pencil, ink, or any other medium if you like • If you have access to a computer and Photoshop or Illustrator you can try this digitally, but I think hand drawn is your best bet • You should be filling the paper as much as possible Resources: Pinterest Calligram Board |
